There isn’t anyone who has shaped modern-day physics and the way we understand the origins of our universe more than theoretical physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking. But aside from his intelligence and the prominence of his theories on the way the world works, he has also served as an inspiration to many people for proving that physical limitations are but a small hump that can be overcome in the attainment of success. I would like to extend this thank you letter to him for continuing to be someone I, like many others, look up to.
During my school days, I was never an ace in my Physics or Astronomy class. Yet, the idea of the cosmos and how the universe came to be has always been a source of mystical curiosity. Because of that, I was always interested in reading through articles or books about the subject. The best ones I came across with are the ones you wrote. And while not all the ideas are clear cut for me (I admit, some of the terminology escapes me) I have always admired how great your mind is.
What is even more commendable is that you didn’t let your physical condition stop you from continuing and excelling in your life’s work. I’d like to let you know that this is perhaps the main reason why I felt moved to write you this thank you letter. You mention on your website that learning of your disease made you appreciate and enjoy life even more and that continuing your research gave you a renewed purpose. There are many individuals who find it so easy to concede defeat when faced with challenges--whether it is a physical, personal, or financial setback. But you have proven to us all that these trials should be faced and not shied away from you. After all, our greatness does not rely on what we look like, how much we earn, nor in the people who know us but in the capacity of our intellect and the extent of our dreams.
I am truly in awe of all that you have achieved and, even more, in your resilience to face and challenge life the way it has challenged you. You remain, in my opinion, one of the most inspirational individuals of this generation.
Please accept this thank you letter and my sincerest gratitude for being such a great symbol of excellence, strength, and intelligence. Knowing of you, your work, and your life story uplifts me and reminds me that truly nothing is impossible.
Wishing you the best,
